Hobless Shower Conversions Sydney
Sydney Home Mods specialises in hobless shower conversions across Sydney: removing the shower hob, regrading the floor to a linear drain, waterproofing, slip-resistant tiling, and fitting grab rails, hand-held showers and fold-down seats. A hobless shower makes showering safer for anyone using a walker, wheelchair or shower chair. Each conversion is designed around your OT's recommendations, and quoted and completed by a licensed builder from our network.

A hobless shower has no raised edge between the bathroom floor and the shower area. Instead, the floor is graded so that water drains to an outlet, usually a linear (strip) drain, and remains within the shower zone. The result is a level, walk-in or roll-in shower that is easier and safer for everyone in the household to use. Hobless showers are also easier to clean and suit households planning for future mobility needs.

Who Benefits from a Step-Free Shower?
A step-free shower is often one of the first changes an occupational therapist recommends for:
- Older people at risk of falls who wish to continue showering independently
- Wheelchair users and people who use shower commodes or chairs
- People recovering from surgery, a stroke or a serious injury
- People living with a progressive condition who are planning ahead
- Carers who need space to assist safely
How a Hobless Shower Conversion Works
- 1Assessment and quote. The builder inspects the bathroom, checks the floor structure and drainage, and reviews any OT report.
- 2Demolition. The existing hob, screen and tiles are removed.
- 3Floor regrading and waterproofing. The floor is set down or regraded so that water falls to the drain, then fully waterproofed to Australian Standards.
- 4Drainage. A linear or centre drain is installed in the correct position for the new falls.
- 5Tiling and fit-off. Slip-resistant tiles, grab rails, a hand-held shower on a rail, a fold-down seat where required, and a screen or curtain that does not obstruct access.
Most conversions take one to two weeks, depending on the floor type and whether the rest of the bathroom is renovated at the same time.
Hobless Shower Cost in Sydney
A hobless shower conversion on its own typically costs $8,000 to $25,000, with $12,000 to $15,000 common for a standard bathroom. The price depends on the floor type (concrete slab or timber), how far the floor needs to be lowered, any drainage changes, and the tiles and fixtures selected. Funding for Step-Free Showers
A hobless shower may be funded, subject to assessment and approval:
- NDIS: usually as a home modification. Changing the floor to create a step-free shower is generally treated as complex work and requires builder quotes. See NDIS home modifications.
- Aged care: My Aged Care, Support at Home or a Home Care Package may contribute to the cost.
- DVA, insurance and private: veterans, insurance claimants and private clients may also fund this work.
A hobless shower is often part of a full disabled bathroom renovation. It is one of many Sydney home modifications that make daily life safer.
